Before You Send Money, Verify Who You're Paying

Three checks take minutes and can save a deposit. The supplier's marketing pitch and the company's official registration data are not always the same story — the gaps are where payment risk lives.

Know Who You're Paying Before You Send a Deposit

A single plain-English risk report digs into legal risk, ownership, manufacturing signals and — most importantly — whether the bank account you are about to wire money to actually belongs to the company you contracted with.

What a Full Risk Report Looks Like

Here is the format of the China Supplier Risk Check — a clear score, what looks good, what needs attention, and a plain-English recommendation. The company, figures and findings below are an illustrative example only; every real report is prepared from actual public records for the supplier you submit.

EXAMPLE REPORT — ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY · NOT A REAL COMPANY OR REAL FINDINGS
Shenzhen ABC Technology Co., Ltd. (fictional example)

What needs attention

⚠

🔴
Payment beneficiary differs from the registered supplier name.Important issue
Recommendation (example) Clarify the payment entity relationship in writing and obtain additional manufacturing evidence (factory floor photos, a video call from the production line, or a third-party inspection) before sending a large deposit. Starting with a sample or small initial order is recommended.

Scores are calculated from structured rules applied to the records checked — they are decision-support indicators, not a guarantee of any business outcome.

Check Who Will Receive Your Money

Before sending a deposit, compare three names: the supplier's registered legal company, the seller on the proforma invoice, and the bank account beneficiary. If they do not line up, you need an explanation before you wire funds.

1 · Registered Company
Official registration record
Shenzhen ABC Technology Co., Ltd.
✓ Verified active entity
2 · Proforma Invoice
Name on the PI you pay to
Shenzhen ABC Technology Co., Ltd.
✓ Matches registered company
3 · Bank Beneficiary
Account receiving the wire
ABC International Holdings Ltd.
🔴 Different name — important issue

⚠ Payment entity mismatch — Important issue

The company receiving your money is not the company on the contract. In this example, the money would go to a differently named entity — a situation that deserves a documented explanation before payment, especially if the account change arrives by email mid-transaction.

A mismatch does not automatically mean fraud. Chinese suppliers may use related companies, group entities or Hong Kong companies for international payments, and legitimate reasons exist. However, the relationship should be understood, plausible and documented before payment — and sudden bank-detail changes are a classic fraud pattern. When in doubt, call the supplier on a previously known phone number to confirm.

What This Check Can — and Cannot — Tell You

A desktop supplier check surfaces company information, inconsistencies and risk signals. It is powerful due diligence — but it is not a guarantee, and we would rather tell you that up front.

It can identify

  • Whether the company is a real, registered and active Chinese legal entity
  • Company age, registered location and approved business scope
  • Legal, enforcement and abnormal-operation signals in public and commercial records
  • Inconsistencies between platform claims and company information
  • Whether the payment beneficiary matches the contracted company
  • Concrete next steps to resolve each open question

It cannot guarantee

  • Future delivery or on-time shipment
  • Product quality or workmanship
  • Supplier performance or communication behavior
  • Ownership of every claimed production facility
  • A dispute-free transaction
  • That no information exists outside the sources checked
How we phrase risk — we never label a supplier simply “safe” or “unsafe.” Reports use plain, honest terms: ✓ Low apparent risk ⚠ Moderate risk 🔴 Elevated risk Insufficient information — and where no major signals appear, we say “no major red flags identified from the sources checked,” rather than promising none exist.

Need More Than a Desktop Check?

A records check answers “who is this company?” — but growing an order often takes someone on the ground in China. ChinaBuyPro can also help you communicate with suppliers, verify information in China, order samples, inspect goods and manage sourcing end to end.

  • Supplier communication and negotiation in Chinese
  • Sample ordering and product sourcing
  • Quality inspection, consolidation and international shipping
  • On-the-ground verification and factory visits where practical

Supplier Check Questions, Answered

Start with the legal company behind the supplier: ask for its exact Chinese company name and business license, confirm it is an active registered company on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (gsxt.gov.cn), and check its establishment date, registered location and business scope. Then compare what the supplier claims (factory status, years in business, export experience, certificates) against registration data and other public signals, and — most importantly — compare the name on the proforma invoice with the bank beneficiary name before you pay. Our $19.9 China Supplier Risk Check pulls these facts together and adds legal risk signals, ownership information when available, manufacturing signals, payment beneficiary consistency and a plain-English report.
Yes. Send us the supplier's Alibaba store URL or the company name shown on their storefront, and we identify the registered Chinese legal entity behind it and check its registration, business scope and available risk signals. Keep in mind that Alibaba badges such as Gold Supplier or Verified Supplier describe the store's status on the platform — they are paid and audited membership programs, not a guarantee that you are dealing with a factory or that payment is risk-free. A Gold Supplier can still be a trading company or a young company, so the company registration and the payment beneficiary name should still be checked independently. See our guide on how to verify a Chinese supplier for the full process.
Yes, and it is common. On Chinese B2B marketplaces, many trading companies list themselves as manufacturers because “factory” listings attract more buyers. Registration data and business scope often show trading, wholesale or technology-commercial activity rather than manufacturing; other signals include an unusually broad product range, offices rather than production premises, and inability to share factory floor photos or video calls from the production line. Being a trading company is not itself a red flag — good trading companies add real value — but misrepresentation of who you are dealing with is worth understanding before you pay. The full report covers manufacturing-related signals and platform/company consistency.
The minimum we need is the supplier's company name (preferably the exact legal name in Chinese, but the English name or the Alibaba/1688 store URL works as a starting point) and your contact details so we can send the result. For a more useful report you can also tell us what you plan to buy, your estimated order value, and attach the supplier's Chinese business license if they shared one. The proforma invoice and the bank beneficiary details help us check payment-entity consistency, which is where a large share of cross-border payment problems show up.
Yes. If the supplier has sent you their Chinese business license (营业执照), include it when you order and we read the key fields — the Unified Social Credit Code, exact company name, legal representative, registered capital, establishment date, registered address and approved business scope — and cross-check them against official registration records. A license image alone can be altered or taken from another company, so the code and name are always verified against registration records rather than trusted from the file itself.
A beneficiary name that differs from the company on your contract or proforma invoice is the single most important payment signal — pause before transferring. It does not automatically mean fraud: Chinese suppliers sometimes use related companies, group entities or Hong Kong companies to receive international payments. But the relationship should be explained, documented and plausible (similar names, same group, stated on the invoice in writing), and sudden changes to bank details during a transaction are a classic scam pattern. Ask the supplier in writing why the beneficiary differs and confirm the account through a known phone number or video call — never through contact details in the email announcing the change. The full report includes a proforma invoice entity check and payment beneficiary consistency review.
No — and no honest company can guarantee that. A desktop supplier check identifies available company information, inconsistencies and risk signals from public and commercial data sources. It cannot guarantee future delivery, product quality, supplier performance, ownership of every claimed production facility, or a dispute-free transaction. We report findings in plain English using terms such as low apparent risk, moderate risk, elevated risk and insufficient information, and we recommend concrete next steps. For high-value orders, combine the check with samples, a small initial order, and — where budgets allow — third-party inspection or on-site factory verification, which ChinaBuyPro can arrange through its sourcing services.
The China Supplier Risk Check is a one-time $19.9 per supplier with no subscription. It includes company identity, registration and history, legal and enforcement risk signals, administrative and abnormal-operation risk signals, shareholder and corporate information when available, business activity and manufacturing-related indicators, platform/company consistency, export-related signals when available, business license analysis, proforma invoice entity check, payment beneficiary consistency, key red flags, a Supplier Risk Score, a plain-English explanation of what it means, and recommended next steps. Because online card payment is not yet connected, clicking the $19.9 button opens WhatsApp with a pre-filled order message and we arrange payment and report delivery manually.
Full risk reports are delivered within 24 hours after payment on business days. Each report is prepared by our team from public Chinese registration sources and commercial company databases, translated and summarized into plain English — it is not an instant automated lookup, because we do not fabricate database results.
